NVUM Spending Reports from Michigan State

Latest reports and files (Updated April 3, 2006)

Spending Profiles by activity (PDF):  (181K) . Based on the four year national NVUM sample, this report includes spending profiles for 12 activity subgroups.  Segments defined by the primary activity on the trip are divided into local and non-local visitors on day and overnight trips.  Spending averages are presented for high, average and low spending areas.

Four Year Combined report  (PDF) : (229K)  Spending profiles based on four years of data, includes national average profiles for trip type and activity segments from all national forests and estimates of segment shares, party sizes, and day and overnight trip spending for 119 forests.

FY 2003 Report (PDF):  (218K).  This report examines the effects of some changes in survey questions in FY 2003 and develops spending profiles for a revised set of trip segments that take into account lodging types. Spending averages are reported on both a per trip and per day basis. Results for individual forests surveyed in FY 2003 are also included.

Three Year Combined report (PDF). or (DOC)  Files are 1.3MB each.  Summary report with combined cases from Years 2000-2002 and forests sampled in first three years of NVUM.

Spending Profiles, Short Report :  Includes all tables from the first two years for making spending estimates from NVUM data at national and forest level and for applications to specific management alternatives. Also examples illustrating the application of NVUM spending profiles. (PDF, 295K, 31pp)

NVUM Tables  . An excel spreadsheet with tables for FY2002 and comparable tables for combined data from first two years.

SNACK Model - an Excel spreadsheet model for estimating spending and economic impacts of National Forest Visitor Spending. Includes the NVUM spending profiles and parameters for applying these to individual forests. A brief SNACK documentation file is also available. The SNACK model is an adaptation of MGM2 model  developed for the National Park Service. We have substituted NVUM visitor spending profiles, and added procedures to make estimates for individual forests on the "Visits" page. SNACK uses some built-in "generic" multipliers for tourism-related sectors that are based on IMPLAN models for local regions of varying population size. SNACK is somewhat more flexible than FEAST, but only addresses recreation impacts and doesn't directly interface with IMPLAN. There is a companion routine for extracting multipliers from IMPLAN models for use with SNACK. The prototype here is still under development. The current version uses three year NVUM spending averages but includes visit and segment data for all national forests.

Further information on the NVUM Study including detailed survey methods and the general survey  reports for individual forests are available at the NVUM website.
