Tourism Data from Economic Census and Other Sources

A great deal of information about the economic characteristics and importance of tourism sectors for state, county and local areas may be gleaned from various federal sources such as the Economic Census, County Business Patterns (CBP), Regional Economic Information System (REIS) and other sources. Be aware that no economic sectors are "pure" tourism sectors as most sell to both local residents and tourists.  Satellite Accounting methods can, howver, be used to estimate the tourism shares of economic activity in each sector. Also be aware that coverage varies somewhat across different data series and estimates derived from samples may differ from census estimates. Read the information, definitions or FAQ sections of data websites to fully understand what the data represents. The United States has recently converted from SIC codes to NAICS system for classifying businesses. NAICS provide greater detail for some tourism-related sectors, but be careful in making comparisons between estimates based on SIC vs NAICS. Sectors most relevant for estimating tourism activity are lodging, eating and drinking establishments, recreation and misc. amusements, transportation sectors and retail trade.

4.   IMPLAN datasets from M.I.G, Inc. IMPLAN (MIG) County and zipcode level data sets may be purchased. An advantage of MIG datasets are the filling of undisclosed data at the county level (with simplifying assumptions). These datasets use a 528 sector scheme and may be used with IMPLAN input-output modeling software to estimate multipliers and carry out regional econonomic impact analyses.
